OLEV funding: can I get a grant for my EV charger?

So, you’ve decided to invest in a home EV charging station. It’s a wise decision and one that will open up convenience and cost-savings you never realised were possible. And running an EV is better for Planet Earth, too. So well done!

But you may well now be asking: can I get a grant to pay for my EV charger?

The good news is that, yes, you can!

Thanks to funding from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), you can apply for funding to cover some of the cost of your new EV charge point. So if making the switch to home charging wasn’t already savvy enough, you can now get cash towards the cost!

Homecharge Scheme (EVHS)

The EVHS, which is another name for the OLEV funding, was updated in 2020 to offer a grant of up to £350, covering 75% of the installation costs of a new EV charger. Employers can also access £350 funding through the workplace charging scheme. It only takes minutes to apply, so if you’re thinking about getting an EV charging point installed, it makes sense.

The eligibility criteria for EVHS/OLEV funding are quite simple. To be able to apply for the grant, you will need to meet the following.

Your EV must be on the government’s list of eligible electric vehicles
You must have off-street parking such as a driveway, garage, or dedicated parking space
You must have become the keeper of a new or secondhand EV on or after 1 October 2016 OR must have placed an order for an eligible vehicle (proof will be required)
You can also apply if you’re leasing an eligible vehicle for at least six months

Whether you’re looking to acquire funding for home or work, the EVHS (and Workplace Charge Scheme), offer a great incentive and are clearly indicative of the government’s desire to support people making the switch to EV ownership.

Take a look at AC charging units for the home and their DC charging counterparts for the workplace before starting your OLEV funding application.
